Enhancing intelligent agents with episodic memory
نویسندگان
چکیده
For a human, episodic memory is a memory of past experiences that one gains over a lifetime. While episodic memory appears critical to human function, researchers have done little to explore the potential benefits for an artificially intelligent agent. In this research, we have added a task-independent, episodic memory to a cognitive architecture. To frame the research, we propose that episodic memory supports a set of cognitive capabilities that improve an agent’s ability to sense its environment, reason, and learn. We demonstrate that episodic memory enables agents created with our architecture to employ these cognitive capabilities. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Episodic Memory for Human-like Agents and Human-like Agents for Episodic Memory
Episodic memory has been approached from many levels of analysis and many of its facets have been modeled computationally. Recently, several models of episodic memory have emerged in the domain of intelligent virtual agents (IVAs). Compared to neuro-/psychological models, their plausibility is limited. On the other hand, they can store representations of large environments and other complex mem...
متن کاملAlgorithms for scaling in a general episodic memory
Episodic memory endows autonomous agents with useful cognitive capabilities. However, for long-lived agents, there are numerous unexplored computational challenges in supporting useful episodic-memory functions while maintaining real-time reactivity. This paper presents and summarizes the evaluation of an algorithmic variant to the task-independent episodic memory of Soar that expands the class...

Background & Aims: Recent studies have indicated memory dysfunction in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study aimed to examine the relationship between cognitive selfawareness and episodic memory performance in patients with OCD and healthy individuals. Methods: In the present study, 30 patients with OCD and 30 normal individuals in the Shiraz Professional C...
متن کاملDyBaNeM: Bayesian Episodic Memory Framework for Intelligent Virtual Agents
Episodic Memory (EM) abilities are important for many types of intelligent virtual agents (IVAs). However, the few IVA–EM systems implemented to date utilize indexed logs of events as the underlying memory representation, which makes it hard to model some crucial facets of human memory, including hierarchical organization of episodes, reconstructive memory retrieval, and encoding of episodes wi...
متن کاملComparing Forgetting Algorithms for Artificial Episodic Memory Systems
Episodic memory is essential for human cognition and has also proven necessary for some intelligent agents. The size of an episodic store grows over time unless some forgetting mechanism is in place to keep it in check. In this research, we investigate the effect that different forgetting mechanisms have on the episodic memory performance. We compare three different forgetting algorithms using ...
